The future of James Cameron's Avatar franchise remains in flux, and the filmmaker has now admitted he's beginning to think seriously about what comes next for him beyond Pandora.
While Disney still has Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 tentatively scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031, neither sequel has officially entered production. That uncertainty, coupled with the escalating cost of making the movies, has inevitably raised questions about where Cameron's focus lies as he enters what he describes as the "last act" of his career.
Avatar: Fire and Ash was a box office success in 2025, earning $1.4 billion worldwide. However, it also fell well short of the franchise's previous highs, signalling a decline in interest after Avatar's $2.9 billion and Avatar: The Way of Water's $2.3 billion. With the series carrying enormous production budgets, each new movie needs to make big money to be considered a success.
Speaking after receiving a prestigious Canadian arts award, Cameron reflected on spending more than two decades immersed in the world of Avatar and admitted he's considering moving on.
"That's the question of the hour for me," Cameron started. "There's been momentum in the Avatar universe for 21 years at this point because we started in 2005. I took a little time off to build a submersible and dive to the deepest spot on the planet, as you do, but I came back to Avatar after that. And it's been kind of an unbroken continuum."
"So this is the point where I'm looking at the landscape and asking, 'What are the other stories I want to tell? How many of them do I need to direct myself versus writing and/or producing with other filmmakers?'" he added, perhaps alluding to projects like Ghosts of Hiroshima, The Devils, and potential returns to franchises like Terminator and Alita: Battle Angel.
Cameron later revealed that he's evaluating future projects based on the impact he believes they'll have. "The criterion — I've literally mapped this out for myself over the last two weeks — I started with, 'What will do the most good?' I put that in block letters at the top. And I started looking at all the projects I'm most fond of, asking, 'How's this going to improve our condition? How's that going to make the world better for our kids?'"
"I haven't made those decisions yet. I'm still in this liminal state of mapping out... the last act, if you will. And I don't know if that last act will last a year or 20 years," he concluded.
Despite Cameron's comments, work on the Avatar sequels has not stopped entirely. Producer Rae Sanchini confirmed in April that scripts for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are finished and that the creative team is continuing to move "full speed ahead." Cameron later revealed he was exploring new filmmaking technologies that could allow the remaining sequels to be produced "in half the time for two-thirds of the cost."
For now, Disney continues to list December 21, 2029, for Avatar 4 and December 19, 2031, for Avatar 5.
