Netflix has released the first trailer for Rampage director Brad Peyton's upcoming sci-fi actioner, Atlas, which stars Jennifer Lopez (Cell) as a woman who must learn to "trust A.I." (yes, really).
Previously titled Spider, we first heard about this project back in 2021, but updates have been few and far between since. Aron Eli Coleite penned the most recent draft of the script, while Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will produce for Safehouse Pictures along with Peyton and Jeff Fierson for ASAP Entertainment.
Lopez, who garnered acclaim for her performance in 2019's Hustlers, will play "a woman fighting for humanity in a future where an AI soldier has determined the only way to end war is to end humanity. To out think this rogue AI, Atlas must work with the one thing she fears most — another AI."
With A.I. currently being pushed as the "way forward" in Hollywood, the premise has understandably raised a few eyebrows, but the trailer does some exciting footage, as we see Lopez's character hurtling through the sky as she attempts to gain control of what appears to be some kind of MECH suit.
Check out the teaser below along with a poster, and let us know what you think.
“I’m so honored to be working with Jennifer, Elaine and the rest of the team at Nuyorican Productions along with our partners Joby and Tory at Safehouse,” Peyton said back when the project was first announced. “Having the chance to direct Jennifer in the title role of this movie is a dream come true, as I know she’ll bring the incredible strength, depth and authenticity we’ve all come to admire from her work. Furthermore, Jeff and I are so excited to be back working with Scott, Ori and the entire team at Netflix. They have been nothing short of amazing to work with and we are blessed to have the opportunity to make another movie on the service.”
The official synopsis reads: "Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from A.I. is to trust it."
Atlas also stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla, and Mark Strong. The movie is set to premiere on Netflix on May 24.
