The first taser trailer for The End We Start From is now online.
Based on Megan Hunter's 2017 novel of the same name, this "futuristic fable" stars Jodie Comer (Free Guy, Killing Eve) as a woman who must keep her infant child save in a word that's rapidly becoming unliveable due to catastrophic flooding.
Directed by Mahalia Belo (Ellen, Requiem, The Long Song) from a screenplay by Alice Birch (Normal People, Succession, Dead Ringers, Mothering Sunday, The Wonder), the film was produced by Leah Clarke, Liza Marshall, Adam Ackland, Amy Jackson, and Sophie Hunter.
The movie is set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival later this month, but some members of the press have caught earlier screenings, and early word is mixed. Comer's performance is coming in for a lot of praise, but the movie itself has also been described as a "snoozer."
"Comer, in a role unlike any she's played before, balances a new mother's physical & psychic exhaustion with an unyielding life force that makes her the ideal audience surrogate."
The movie is set to hit thetres in the US on December 8. The number of screens is currently under discussion, with expectation that it will fall somewhere between wide and limited. Paramount’s Republic Pictures acquired North American rights to the dystopian drama during Cannes.
The trailer is very brief, only really giving us a rough idea of what to expect. Check it out below along with a new poster, and let us know if you'll be checking this one out when it arrives in theaters (no international release date has been announced).
"England, tomorrow: Forced out of London by cataclysmic flooding, a new mother (Jodie Comer) her partner (Joel Fry), and their infant make their way to his parents’ home in the countryside, only to find the situation growing increasingly desperate there, as well… An apocalyptic drama that still makes room for hope, The End We Start From uses the language of genre to ask the only question that matters about our increasingly bleak future: What will you do? And why aren't you doing it already?"
The End We Start From also stars Joel Fry, Katherine Waterston, Gina McKee, Nina Sosanya, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch.
