LOGAN'S RUN Remake Is Still In Development According To Writer Simon Kinberg

Our last update on the long-gestating remake of cult '70s sci-fi thriller Logan's Run was almost a decade ago, but it seems the project is still in development.

Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix), who was hired to write the story and treatment for the movie as well as produce along with Joel Silver back in 2015, revealed that he "hopes" Logan's Run will still happen during a recent interview.

"I think there’s enough specificity to Logan’s Run concept in terms of the age clock that makes it pretty different," he told Polygon when asked about the status of the film. "But yeah, I’ve worked on a lot of different kinds of science fiction, and a lot of it has been tonally... You have something really grounded, like The Martian. It was so grounded that when that movie came out we had to actually make a statement that it was not based on a true story. Obviously not; we have not sent human beings to Mars."

Logan's Run is based on the 1967 novel of the same name by William F. Nolan, and is set in a set in a futuristic society where people are executed upon reaching the age of 30. Those that seek to avoid their fate are deemed “Runners.” The protagonist, Logan, is one of those executioners, known as the Sandmen, who ends up on the run after he becomes sympathetic with members of an underground railroad of Runners.

There have been multiple attempts to bring some kind of reimagining to the screen, with the likes of Alex Garland, Will Beall and Christopher McQuarrie all attached to pen the script at different points, and Bryan Singer and Nicolas Winding Refn on board to direct.

Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049, Drive) had reportedly signed on to play the lead role back in 2010, but parted ways with the project when the studio failed to secure the greenlight.

Let's hope this latest take on Logan's Run gets off the ground, because a modernized retelling of this story has a lot of potential.

The original starred Michael York as Logan 5; Richard Jordan as Francis 7; Jenny Agutter as Jessica 6; Roscoe Lee Browne as Box (voice); Farrah Fawcett-Majors as Holly 13; Michael Anderson Jr. as Doc; Peter Ustinov as Old Man; Randolph Roberts as 2nd Sanctuary Man; Lara Lindsay as The Woman Runner (and the uncredited voice of the City computer); Gary Morgan as Billy; and Ashley Cox as Timid Girl.
