Check out a new clip from 20th Century Studios' The Creator which sees John David Washington's ex special forces agent attempt to flee with the powerful childlike AI, Alfie while pursuing forces close in on their location.
The world of The Creator is a futuristic counterpart of our own, where AI robots have developed awareness and independence, sparking a protracted conflict with human forces.
The film kicks into high gear when an ex-special forces agent makes a difficult choice to disobey orders and go on the run when he's ordered to terminate a powerful child-like AI who could potentially end the war.
Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) directed the film and co-wrote the script alongside Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The venerable Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight, Man of Steel, Dunkirk) is handling the score.
"My favorite cinema is very visually driven. It's not like a play, it's like a dream, it's just a pure emotion. This film is a melting pot of movies I grew up loving. It's a Vietnam movie, mixed with robotics and sci-fi," said Edwards in a previously released behind-the-scenes look at the film.
In that same promo, John David Washington added, "Gareth has this ability to inject compassion in a sci-fi genre that usually leans on spectacle and danger."
With a tiny film crew, Edwards visited 80 sites throughout the world to give The Creator a realistic aesthetic. By using this manner of filmmaking instead of the typical sound stage and green screen techniques, Edwards was able to complete the movie for a manageable $86 million.
The film's SDCC panel this past July instantly catapulted it into the discussion of best sci-fi films being released this year and the promo material released since then has done nothing to dilute those high expectations. The question now is whether the film will actually meet them.
The Creator will premiere next week at Fantastic Fest in Texas on September 26 so expect the word on whether Edwards' Rogue One follow-up lives up the hype to quickly circulate online just before its domestic release on the 29th.
The cast includes John David Washington as Joshua, Gemma Chan as Maya, Ken Watanabe as Harun, Sturgill Simpson as Shipley, Madeleine Yuna Voyles as Alfie, and Allison Janney as Howell.
Amid a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war—and mankind itself.
