If a new rumour is to be believed, a TV series based on the Planet of the Apes franchise is currently in the works for Disney+.

The news comes our way from Giant Freakin Robot. While the site understandably has a pretty poor reputation, a few of their scoops have been confirmed by the trades in recent weeks, so we're not going to dismiss this just yet!

While very little is known about the project - including where in the franchise's timeline it would take place - it sounds like it could somehow tie into the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes movie and possibly be released around the same time. As you might expect, this supposed series is being developed with a Disney+ debut in mind, the home of many 20th Century Studios properties since Disney acquired the company.

With Kingdom set to serve as a loose sequel to the trilogy starring Andy Serkis, there's lots of room to explore how the apes managed to overthrow the planet and make it their own. We still haven't reached that post-apocalyptic point in the timeline, though the expectation is that we'll eventually get there.

The movie is expected to pick up long after Caesar's demise, with two different groups of apes embarking on very different missions as they make a place for themselves in the new world.

William H. Macy, Owen Teague, Freya Allen, Dichen Lachman, and Peter Macon are among those who have been cast, and the movie will be released in theaters next May.

Going back to this TV series, though, and time will tell whether it actually becomes a reality. Disney has wasted no time in expanding the franchises it acquired, with a new Alien movie and TV show also currently in the works, for example.

Would you like to see the Planet of the Apes brought to the small screen?
