With the DC Extended Universe now in his rearview, Zack Snyder has shifted focus to a lucrative Netflix deal which has so far allowed him to expand the Dawn of the Dead franchise and launch his own sci-fi property with Rebel Moon.
The first instalment, A Child of Fire, received largely negative reviews but was reportedly a ratings hit (the filmmaker even claimed that would translate into $1.6 billion at the box office). Now, with the second chapter and two director's cuts on the way, Snyder has shed new light on his ambitious plans for the franchise.
"I guess four makes sense. Four or six movies, depending...I guess it's whether or not every time we make one of these movies we make two, that's the question," he told Radio Times of future plans for Rebel Moon.
"We were talking about it the other day and I was like, would an audience be disappointed if they only got one movie now from Rebel Moon?" Snyder added. "Would they be like, 'Oh, it's one now? Great.'"
While Rebel Moon - Part Three has not been greenlit by Netflix, Snyder already has a pretty good idea of where he'd like to take a story originally pitched to Lucasfilm as a Star Wars movie.
"We absolutely have the story all set, we did all that work," he teases. "We wrote a treatment for the movie so we'll see how we go ahead."
Snyder was quick to add that, despite his threequel hopes, The Scargiver will be a satisfying conclusion to the story. "I think the first thing is that people are going to really get this next chapter that really takes and answers all these questions from Part One, and really sort of completes this four-hour experience."
Only time will tell what the future holds in store for Rebel Moon, though we've previously heard of plans for spin-offs, podcasts, video games, and more. Whether those materialise will hinge on the upcoming sequel's success.
