#ReleaseTheRebelMoonCut?
Thankfully, that's not a hashtag we'll see dominating social media in the years to come as Netflix appears to be giving Zack Snyder a lot of creative freedom when it comes to his Rebel Moon plans.
The filmmaker's epic vision for this sci-fi story will be split across two movies, expanding on an idea he once pitched to Lucasfilm for a Star Wars movie (the studio is thought to have got cold feet after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released to negative reviews). Now, it's been confirmed that both instalments will receive R-Rated extended cuts!
Talking to Slash Film, re-recording mixer Andy Koyama talked about working on Rebel Moon and dropped this bombshell.
"We just did the first temp mix for the preview of part one, and it's very exciting. It's a big, huge, space - they probably don't want me to say this - 'Star Wars'-y, 'rebels against the evil empire' thing over all sorts of different worlds," he teased. "It's really fun. There's going to be two films. I think we're mixing that from June to February."
"And there's also going to be extended R-rated versions of each of the two films," Koyama added, "so we're going to be mixing four different features."
After the success of Army of the Dead, Netflix is going all in on Snyder and will likely release these alternate versions of Rebel Moon shortly after the regular ones are released. After all, that's a smart way to get subscribers to watch the same movie twice and should only serve to increase the excitement and intrigue surrounding this franchise.
In the movie, when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past named Kora to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand.
Rebel Moon is set to be released on Netflix on December 22, 2023.
