Amazon is positioning another potential awards-contender for a fall release as it has set Garth Davis' (Lion) Foe for an Oct. 6 release date.

The film is based on a 2018 novel of the same name from  Ian Reid, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Davis.

In Foe, a remote farmer named Junior in a not-so-far-off future is selected to leave the planet and live on a corporate-owned space station as part of its first round of test subjects. Junior will remain on the space station for two years. The offer is made by the mysterious Terrance, a representative of the company.

Terrance also offers to leave a corporate-sponsored, AI doppelganger of Junior to stay behind to tend the farm and keep his wife, Hen, company while he is in outer space.

Over the next several days, Terrance makes repeated visits to the couple's farm to collect data on Junior to create an accurate replica. However, Junior begins to grow jealous of the time Hen begins to spend with Terrance, while at the same time, there are more surprising happenings occurring on the farm.

There's a neat plot twist at the end of the novel that really makes Foe stand out and it will be interesting to see whether the film adaptation replicates that exact bombshell or chooses to do something a little different.

In the film, Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Little Women) will be portraying Hen, while Paul Mescal (God's Creatures, the upcoming Gladiator sequel) will play Junior. Aaron Pierre (Old, the upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King) will be portraying Terrance. LaKeith Stanfield was originally cast in the role before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts.

Junior and Henrietta live a comfortable, solitary life on their farm, far from the city lights, but in close quarters with each other. One day, a stranger from the city arrives with alarming news: Junior has been randomly selected to travel far away from the farm...very far away. The most unusual part? Arrangements have already been made so that when he leaves, Henrietta won't have a chance to miss him, because she won't be left alone—not even for a moment. Henrietta will have company. Familiar company.
