Debuting on Hulu later this month, Vietnamese actress Kelly Marie Tran headlines director Shal Ngo's (The Park, “The Box”) Control Freak, which follows a woman named Val, who becomes afflicted with a demonic parasite.
Struggling with her affliction, it seems Val will have to return to her homeland (Vietnam) to find answers to the mystery behind the demon's identity.
The project is an expansion on director Shal Ngo's original short film, Control, which was released in 2021 as a segment within Hulu's Bite Size Halloween annual special. You can check out more about the original short by heading to Ngo's official website.
Reactions to the debut trailer have certainly been positive, and it seems that the unique visuals and premise are making more than a few film enthusiasts sit up and take notice. Based on the footage, Control Freak is already drawing comparisons to It Follows and REC.
Ngo is an upcoming director who has already taken home prestigious awards and honors from Sundance, SxSW, the Tribeca Film Festival, and the SyFy channel. The Vietnamese director is definitely going to be a name to watch in the coming years.

Control Freak Official Synopsis: A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head. The film stars Kelly Marie Tran as Val, Miles Robbins (Daniel Isn’t Real, Halloween) as Robbie, along with Toan Le as Sang and Kieu Chinh as Aunt Thuy. Rounding out the cast are Callie Johnson and Zack Gold.
Shal Ngo writes and also directs the Hulu original, expanding upon an original short film that was first released in 2021 as part of Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween annual special.
The film is part of WorthenBrooks (formerly 20th Digital Studios) first-look deal with Hulu which has included Grimcutty (2022), Matriarch (2022), Clock (2023), Jagged Mind (2023), Appendage (2023), and The Mill (2023). The producing team includes David Brooks, Arbi Pedrossian, and Jenna Cavelle while Shaum S. Sengupta and Miles Alva serve as executive producers.
Control Freak arrives on Hulu, March 13. The film will be available on Disney+ internationally at a later date.
