Aside from the fact there's a new Tron rollercoaster in Disney World, it's tough to figure out why Disney is forging ahead with the upcoming Tron: Ares. Interest in the franchise has waned in recent years and the concept is arguably one with limited potential.

Regardless, Joachim Rønning, the filmmaker behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, has been tasked with helming a movie which was written by Jesse Wigutow (The Prince) and Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes).

So far, the cast has assembled names like Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Greta Lee, and Deadline reports that Gotham and Star Wars Jedi star Cameron Monaghan is the latest addition to the threequel's cast.

As you might expect, details on his role are being kept a secret, though the movie's plot reportedly revolves around Leto's computer program, Ares, travelling from the digital world to that of humans. It's an interesting spin on the classic concept and may well be what the property needs to find new life in theaters.

The Hollywood Reporter, meanwhile, has shared its own casting update by revealing Sarah Desjardins is also heading to the Grid.

Again, we have no character details, though we're sure you'll recognise the actress from her work in Yellowjackets, The Night Agent, and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Whatever you might think about plans for this project, the cast is undeniably impressive.

It's thought that the current plan is for Tron: Ares to begin shooting next month, but with actors now expected to strike, it's highly likely the movie's start date is going to be pushed back by several months (if not longer).

Tron was released in 1982 and earned $50 million on a $17 million budget. It became a cult classic in the years which followed, while the 2012 sequel, Tron: Legacy, grossed $400 million on a $170 million budget. It was a result which saw the movie deemed a financial disappointment, hence why the way for a sequel has been so long.

Tron 3 doesn't currently have a confirmed release date.
