TRON: ARES Is Reportedly Bringing Back A Key Character From TRON: LEGACY In A Much Bigger Role

We finally have an exciting update about Disney's plans for Tron: Ares as the upcoming threequel will reportedly bring back a key character from Tron: Legacy as the movie's lead villain. Check it out!

It's been a while since we've received a significant update about Tron: Legacy sequel, Tron: Ares, but a new report might shed at least a little more light on what we can expect from the long-awaited threequel.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Batman Begins and Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy is expected to appear in the movie.

As you may recall, the actor actually made an uncredited appearance as the head of ENCOM's software design team, Edward Dillinger, Jr. in Tron: Legacy. While his role was little more than a cameo, the prevailing theory among fans was that his character was likely the son of former ENCOM Senior Executive Ed Dillinger (David Warner).

It sounds like Murphy will not only reprise that role but also serve as Tron: Ares' lead villain. This lines up with previous reports that both Dillingers will be the movie's big bads, though we'd imagine some changes will be made after Warner sadly died last year.

While it's unclear how many characters from either the last movie or 1982's classic Tron will appear, Garrett Hedlund recently told us "Oh goodness, you know…you never know what the future holds" when we asked about his Tron: Ares status.

What we do know is that Morbius star Jared Leto will be this movie's lead, while Maleficent: Mistress of Evil helmer Joachim Rønning is attached to direct. Cameras are expected to begin rolling this July in Vancouver, though that could be delayed due to the ongoing WGA strike.

Talks of a third movie have persisted for years, and after Tron: Legacy underperformed, it appeared the franchise might end there. Some time has now passed, though, and with a new Tron attraction recently opening in Disney World, the studio is finally returning to The Grid. Whether Hedlund will be part of that remains to be seen, but it would be a real shame for the Flynn family to be completely sidelined.
