Twelve years later, the rave reviews and strong word of mouth that V/H/S garnered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival are still paying dividends for the Brad Miska-created horror anthology series.
The premise revolves around several unsettling VHS recordings that are uncovered by unwitting viewers and the controlling influence of the videos over those who watch the tapes. It was developed from an original story concept by Brad Miska.
Each installment features a unique group of directors and cast, with the anthology series existing mostly as a stand-alone in nature, yet similar themes point to a single fictional antagonist, known as the Entity, as the basis for all of the evil that results from viewing the videos.
The sixth installment, V/H/S/85 debuted on Shudder and AMC+ last week and broke all kinds of records for the network. Now, talk is already turning to the next film in the found-footage horror series and it seems the franchise will be headed to space.
Following the announcement of a seventh season at NYCC this past weekend, an official press release was distributed.
"Jason Voorhees, Leprechaun, Pinhead, Dracula, even the Amityville Horror house ended up in space, so as we move into our own Part 7 it was only natural that we should too,” said producer Josh Goldbloom. “The sci-fi horror genre provides us an infinite playground of forbidden worlds and dangerous lifeforms, a formula which we’re confident will lead to the biggest, maddest, bloodiest V/H/S ever.”
Per the same press release, the next installment will, "feature five new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape, will release in 2024."
Head of AMC Networks’ Film Group Scott Shooman added, "The V/H/S franchise has been terrifying and entertaining audiences for over a decade now thanks to the work of some of the genre’s most gifted filmmakers. Following the massive success of V/H/S/85 and its previous installments on Shudder, it’s clear that the filmmaking team won’t be running out of unique ideas anytime soon. We’re thrilled that the franchise is going in a bold, new direction that will surprise fans and newcomers alike, and demonstrate the innovative capabilities of sci-fi within the world of V/H/S."
Stay tuned for more updates as the next crop of directors for the next installment will likely be announced in short order. Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Black Phone) headlined the crop of directors that helmed shorts for V/H/S/85.
