A new season of Black Mirror could be coming to Netflix. Variety reports that casting is underway on Season 6 of the sci-fi anthology series.
It's been nearly three years since Season 5 of Black mirror premiered on the streaming service and comments from creator Charlie Brooker back in 2020 led many to wonder if the series would actually return for a new season. At the time, he told UK's Radoi Times magazine, “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”
However, it's believed that the hold up had more to do with licensing rights to Black Mirror, which stayed with Endemol Shine Group after Charlie Brooker and his creative partner Annabel Jone sleft their production company House of Tomorrow and started their new production company Broke and Jones. Endemol Shine Group was acquired by Banijay Group in the summer of 2020 and it seems it has finally struck a deal to license the show to Netflix.
As for what fans can expect with Season 6, Variety reports it will be "more cinematic in scope, with each installment being treated as an individual film." This is pretty in line with what fans have come to expect from the show in recent seasons. Black Mirror has always boasted incredibly high production value and later seasons seemed to embrace more cinematic storytelling with episode run times usually exceeding 60 minutes.
Not only will Season 6 maintain this same standard of high quality storytelling, but fans will be happy to hear that it will have more episodes than Season 5. The fifth season was comprised of just three episodes, each over one hour in length. It also featured some incredible star power including Andrew Scott, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace and Miley Cyrus.
It's unclear how long we'll have to wait to see Season 6 of Black Mirror, but it seems like it's still very early in production if casting is just now getting underway.
