This week's episode of Andor saw the title character (Diego Luna) sent to serve out his 6-year sentence on a vast, deep-space prison vessel, where he encounters a familiar face.
Andy Serkis, who played the villainous Supreme Leader Snoke in the recent Star Wars sequel trilogy, returned to the Galaxy Far, Far away for a new role as inmate/labor foreman Kino Loy, who demands nothing but the highest level of productivity from his workers.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, Serkis explained what drew him to this particular character, and whether the (false) perception that he might be playing a "proto-Snoke" gave him pause.
"It's a difficult one because I'm sure that's exactly what people will think. And why would they think other? I was a bit confused as to whether to do it or not, but it was purely because I love Rogue One. I truly loved the grounding of that film in a world which felt both real and yet still felt epic. Also, I'm getting to play a character at the opposite end of the spectrum of a highly powerful Supreme Leader. [Kino Loy] is someone who is a real person in this world.
We don't get to learn very much about Loy, but a confrontation with the rebellious Andor seems inevitable. Kino only has a few months left of his sentence and doesn't want to ruffle any feathers, but we know that Cassian must escape at some point.
