Andor has been hailed as one of the best Star Wars stories ever told on screen, but Cassian Andor is obviously a character we first met back in 2016's Rogue One.
While that movie went through some major changes during reshoots, it was originally written by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, and it turns out they had their own idea for a television spin-off. Disney+ wasn't a thing back then, though there had been rumblings for some time that Lucasfilm might have small screen plans for the franchise.
Following Andor's edge-of-your-seat finale, Whitta took to social media to reveal that he and Weitz planned to pitch a series to Lucasfilm that was going to be set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
In that, we'd have seen the victorious Rebel Alliance putting together a Mossad-style stream to track down Imperial war criminals. It doesn't sound like this idea was ever taken to studio executives, but it's a really cool concept that definitely would have complimented Rogue One.
"Years ago my Rogue One co-writer Chris Weitz and I had a cool idea for a TV show about a Mossad-style Rebel team hunting down Imperial war criminals who fled and disappeared after the fall of the Empire," Whitta says. "Could have been a cool bookend to R1. We never did anything with it though."
We've seen in The Mandalorian that the Empire didn't just roll over in the wake of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader's respective demises, so it would make sense for Rebels to track down those who remained loyal to them. The Jon Favreau/Dave Filoni slate of TV shows are doing a great job of exploring the fallout from that time, though.
There's nothing to suggest this series will now become a reality, but the response from fans online has definitely been positive. With Andor proving such a hit - without a single Jedi or Sith in sight - perhaps Lucasfilm will be open to taking more risks with the franchise moving forward?
