SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Writer Lawrence Kasdan Would Return For A Sequel...On One Condition

The Empire Strikes Back writer Lawrence Kasdan has said he would be open to penning a sequel to 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story, but the Lucasfilm icon has a very specific condition. Read on for details...

Lawrence Kasdan's name might not be as instantly familiar as George Lucas', but make no mistake about it, his contributions to the Star Wars Universe were massive. He wrote the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and was even enlisted by Lucasfilm to work on The Force Awakens

It's hardly a surprise then that he was tasked with penning Solo: A Star Wars Story (alongside his son Jon), but with a change in directors and a multitude of issues behind the scenes, that movie had the odds stacked against it from early on.

Reviews were ultimately tepid, while a $393 million global box office haul was considered a disappointment after the budget ballooned to as much as $300 million. Despite that, fans remain keen to see more of Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo, especially after the movie ended on a massive cliffhanger involving Darth Maul.

During a recent interview with Inverse, Lawrence was asked if he would be open to continuing Han's solo on Disney+. "No, there’s not any talk of that," the writer confirmed. "I’ve never been particularly drawn to expanding [Solo] into a show."

"But, I do talk to Jon [Kasdan] and Ron [Howard] a lot about what went right and what went wrong with the Solo experience," he continued. "I would be more interested in doing another movie, not a TV series." We're guessing that means Kasdan won't be part of the Lando TV series that appears to have fallen by the wayside at Lucasfilm.

The ever-popular #MakeSolo2Happen social media campaign proves fans want Han's story to continue, though the most likely destination for that is streaming.

Kasdan's involvement would be a plus but, at the same time, Lucasfilm may want to start from scratch. Either way, with Ehrenreich recently signing up for a role in Marvel Studios' Ironheart, he won't have time to head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away until he's finished with his Marvel Cinematic Universe commitments.

Are you still optimistic about a Solo sequel or has the moment passed?

Most people don't care about a sequel to Solo, even those who have liked it. The movie was average and there are surely more interesting movies to make than a sequel to that one. Solo had its chance, they failed to make it a success (or a good movie for that matter).

There were two things I really didn't like about Solo. The first and biggest is that Harrison Ford is Han. There is no getting past that for me. Nothing against Ehrenreich, but he just isn't Han Solo. He was only a few years younger than Ford was when he first played Han, so it's not like a McGregor/Guinness situation where you have two vastly different ages of the same character being played. I think the movie would have been better served if you had someone like Anthony Ingruber playing Han. He resembles Ford and sounds like him.

The other issue I had was they crammed every piece of Han Solo lore into the movie. You didn't have to explain EVERY piece of Han's backstory in the movie.

I think this movie would have been much better received if it were fine tuned and turned into a Dash Rendar film. It's just going to be hard to make a non-Harrison Ford Han Solo. It will be the same with Indiana Jones. Ford IS those characters.
