Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic won’t be keeping fans waiting until 2030. After the game’s surprise reveal at The Game Awards, speculation quickly spread online suggesting the ambitious RPG might not arrive until the end of the decade.
Those rumors were largely fueled by commentary from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who pointed out that Arcanaut Studios, the studio behind the project, only officially formed earlier this year. However, game director Casey Hudson has since stepped in to set the record straight, reassuring fans that the game will release before 2030.
One of the most talked-about announcements of the show, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a narrative-driven, single-player RPG positioned as a spiritual successor to 2003’s beloved Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The project is being developed at Arcanaut Studios, a newly established team made up of veteran developers whose past credits include KOTOR, the Mass Effect trilogy, and work at major studios such as Microsoft, Epic Games, Remedy, and The Coalition. While Arcanaut may be a new name, the talent behind it brings decades of experience in storytelling-heavy RPGs.
The game was unveiled with a cinematic teaser trailer alongside a brief but evocative description of its core premise. According to the official synopsis, players will " step into the role of a Force user on a journey through a galaxy on the edge of rebirth."
The description continues: "Blending innovative storytelling, memorable characters, and heart-pounding combat, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic immerses you in an unforgettable experience where every decision deepens your journey toward light or darkness."
Despite the excitement surrounding the reveal, Schreier’s comments tempered expectations, suggesting that a 2030 release window was an “optimistic guess” given the studio’s recent formation. As that estimate gained traction across social media, Hudson took to address the concerns directly, assuring fans that the game’s release timeline is shorter than feared. While he did not offer a specific launch window, his statement confirmed that the project will arrive before the end of the decade.
That said, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is still in early development, meaning fans should expect a multi-year wait. With several high-profile Star Wars projects having gone quiet in recent years, including the long-delayed KOTOR remake and Star Wars Eclipse, many are hoping Arcanaut Studios will maintain open communication as development continues. For now, Hudson’s reassurance has eased concerns, keeping excitement high for what could become the next great chapter in Star Wars RPG history.
