At Star Wars Celebration on Friday, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced plans for three new movies set in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.
According to the executive, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold will tell a story set 25,000 in the past that follows the emergence of the first Jedi. Dave Filoni, meanwhile, is stepping behind the camera for a movie that brings together the stories we've seen told on Disney+ during The Mandalorian's timeframe in an epic crossover event.
The biggest news? Daisy Ridley's return as Rey for a movie set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker from Ms. Marvel helmer Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Many fans have wondered whether these projects will come to fruition, especially when looking back at those promised by Kennedy that have never actually happened (Rogue Squadron immediately springs to mind).
Talking to Variety, she was asked where things stand with Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi's long-rumoured Star Wars movie.
"Taika is still working away. He's writing the script himself. He doesn't really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him," Kennedy explained. "He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that's what he's doing. But we're going to make that one day."
It doesn't sound like a priority for the studio at this time, and we wouldn't be surprised if it falls by the wayside just like Kevin Feige and Michael Waldron's untitled movie.
Kennedy also weighed in on Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson's planned trilogy.
"Rian and I talk all the time. He is unbelievably busy. So we’re not actively involved in anything at the moment because he’s doing another one of the 'Glass Onion' movies and then God knows what else," she says. "But he really wants to step back into the space. It’s a big commitment of time, so that’s really on him."
Again, we're not convinced that either of these Star Wars movies is going to happen but, on a brighter note, Kennedy seems confident that these three new projects are on the docket and moving in the right direction.
We'll be keeping everything crossed, that's for sure.
