Star Wars icon Mark Hamill has sarcastically apologized for an earlier post featuring an AI generated image of President Donald Trump laying dead in a shallow grave.

Earlier this week, Hamill, who's best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the beloved sci-fi franchise, shared the image on social media, which depicted the U.S. president laying in a flower-surrounded grave in front of a gravestone that reads, "Donald J. Trump 1946-2024," with the words "If Only" written as an overlay.

Hamill's caption read: "If Only - He should live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes. Long enough to realize he'll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore."

The post, shared shortly after an assassination attempt against the president, quickly drew backlash from Trump’s team. President Trump’s rapid response account labeled Hamill a “sick individual,” arguing that comments like his help fuel threats and assassination attempts targeting the president.

"These Radical Left lunatics just can’t help themselves," the administration's Rapid response account wrote. "This kind of rhetoric is exactly what has inspired three assassination attempts in two years against our President."

Facing backlash, Hamill had revised his post on BlueSky by Thursday afternoon, issuing a sarcastic apology to anyone who took offense. Sharing a new photo of President Trump with his hair blowing wildly in the wind, Hamill shared an edited version of his post with a bit more clarity and a so-called apology.

Accurate Edit for Clarity: "He should live long enough to... be held accountable for his... crimes."

Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate.

Hamill is a vocal Democrat supporter, and was even recently invited by former President Barack Obama to visit his newly opened presidential library in Chciago.

While he isn't part of any upcoming Star Wars projects, Hamill's name is still synonymous with the Star Wars franchise, and the timing couldn't be worse for Disney, which has been trying to stay politically neutral and avoid alienating half its audience. With The Mandalorian and Grogu hitting theaters in just a few weeks, conservative commentators were already calling for a boycott before the trailers even had a chance to trend. It's a reminder that as long as Hamill is seen as the face of Star Wars, his off-screen behavior will follow the brand whether Disney likes it or not.

What an incredible dumb take.

First to get the (...OTHER..) obvious out of the way.
It's pretty clear that Matt Thomas (@MattThomas) is part of the "half the audience" he thinks Disney should be worried about alienating (.....put aside the silly math of assuming that "half" the audience was potentially offended by this, about a man who's never enjoyed the support of half the country - never having had higher than 50% approval rating in either of his two terms (currently sitting in the low 30's) - the only president in recorded history to boast of such a distinction -..... was never elected to office in either of his terms by higher than 50% of the popular vote, and doesn't even enjoy anywhere close to 50% of support in HIS OWN party)), hence the reason this article even exists in the first place and is coded in the way it is ("so-called apology". Because of course,...Mark Hamill should have PERSONALLY apologized to Matt Thomas while dressed in sackcloth and covered in ash...).

So with that out of the way, let's break down exactly how it IS a DUMB take, nonetheless.

The idea that Disney should worry about someone expressing themselves, who's not even a part of their franchise or any upcoming movies of theirs, and who hasn't appeared in any live-action productions for them in almost 20 years - just because he is seen as "the face of the franchise" (Really? Wouldn't that be either Pedro Pascal or Diego Luna .....or even Rosario Dawson? Seeing as they are the actual LITERAL faces of their current live action productions. Of course, if problematic politicized statements by leads is what's worrying you (and also what they look like and are (Hispanic)), then you're going to have even more problems with the current faces of the franchise than with the guy from 40 years ago - given what these three have said about the current administration and guy), is mind-boggingly bizarre,..... not to mention stupid.

Let's not forget that we're not that far removed from when the same "conservative voices" were voicing those same thoughts demanding Disney/ABC get rid of Kimmel (the first time) for making a joke (the party of 'Free Speech Absolutism' guys and the 'Anti-Snowflakes' party, by the way), and when it seemed like they,...Disney,..... would, it turned out that more than (ACTUAL) half their audience were more in Kimmel's side than weren't - enough to put a significant enough pressure campaign on them to make them change course and stand firm behind him.

So if they didn't (couldn't) fire Kimmel, what are you expecting them to do to Hamill?

Especially if it's for the mere crime of expressing what (....by most current polls) seems like ACTUALLY more than half the country actually feel about Donald Trump........a guy who's expressed much much worse thoughts about his predecessors (including racist nonsense) and about Americans protesting against him?

It's weird that this is the person that people like Matt Thomas feels we should be concerned their fee-fees getting hurt,..... because Hamill expressed what is otherwise a very popular and common sentiment right about now.

Weird but not surprising.

Bonus round:

If they were already planning a boycott against a movie they haven't seen (ostensibly because the star once said something humane about the treatment of Trans people like his sister, or immigrants), then why should anyone take them seriously or contemplate 'muzzling' former stars because of them?
These people were never going to watch the movie anyway.
So what the hell are we even doing here?

We're worried that someone who wasn't going to watch the movie,.......isn't going to watch the movie??!?!?
Hot take, Matt.

I think Disney, and 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' will do just fine if the 'Gina Carano Simp club' and the @MattThomas 'es of the world decide to skip it.

And you can't have it both ways.
You can't be upset because Disney decided to fire Carano once upon a time (she wasn't fired but still,....) because she said something that Disney were worried would upset a good chunk of their audience or at the very least was demeaning to their brand,.....but then at the same time suggest that they should be upset because Mark Hamill (who's not even employed by them currently, unlike Carano) did the same thing.
