Skeleton Crew is quite easily one of the more intriguing Star Wars projects heading our way, with very little known about how the series will fit into the wider Galaxy Far, Far Away (we've heard next to nothing since fans at last April's Star Wars Celebration were treated to a brief sneak peek).

What we do know is that the Disney+ series focuses on a group of kids who get lost in space, with Jude Law cast in the lead role as a mysterious Jedi. With a confirmed post-Return of the Jedi setting, we also anticipate it somehow tying into The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.

Collider recently caught up with director and executive producer Jon Watts and learned that Skeleton Crew is set to launch this holiday season. That presumably means a December launch.

The filmmaker also shared a new description of the series. "It's about a group of kids that find a mysterious secret on their planet and accidentally get lost out in the galaxy," Watts teased, "and it's the story abut them trying to find their way back home."

"You don’t need to have really any prior Star Wars knowledge to enjoy it. But if you do, you can enjoy it on many levels," he added, suggesting the series will be relatively standalone.

Elsewhere in the interview, Watts revealed how Skeleton Crew will blend modern filmmaking techniques with the movie magic which made the original Star Wars movies so special. Seeing as the Spider-Man: No Way Home helmer grew up on the original trilogy, this shouldn't come as a surprise.

"I got to use all the cool stuff on my most recent Star Wars show. We had pre-viz, MOCAP, we shot on the volume, we did everything. But the most fun part was we also used all the old school techniques as well," he explained. "We got Phil Tippett to do stop-motion. We did matte paintings, like real old-fashioned matte paintings."

"We got an ILM painter out of retirement to come out and do that. So to me, all that stuff is fun, but it's just another tool, and it depends on how you use it."

Skeleton Crew follows the journey of four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home—and meeting unlikely allies and enemies—will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.

As noted, Law leads the series and is joined by young actors Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

Tunde Adebimpe and Kerry Condon also star, while the directing team consists of Jon Watts, Christopher Ford, David Lowery, the Daniels, Jake Schreier, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Lee Isaac Chung.

A premiere date has yet to be revealed by Lucasfilm and Disney+.
