Lucasfilm announced that Taika Waititi (Thor: Love and Thunder, Jojo Rabbit) would helm an untitled Star Wars movie last year, but updates have been practically non-existent since, and the project was only mentioned in passing during the recent Star Wars Celebration.
Even so, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy did reassure fans that the film is still in-development, and Waititi has now confirmed that he's hard at work on the script... though it sounds like he's struggling to crack the story!
While chatting to THR, Waititi offered an update on the mysterious movie's status.
“I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.’”
Hey, there's always room for more Han/Chewie-esque dynamics in the Galaxy Far, Far Away!
In all seriousness, Waititi's comments indicate that this film is still only in the very early stages, so we probably shouldn't expect to find out any solid plot details for quite a while.
For now, work continues on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Rey-focused movie starring Daisy Ridley, Dave Filoni's film that will tie the various TV shows together, and James Mangold's project about the dawn of the Jedi.
