Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker unfolded at a breakneck pace, though that certainly wasn't a good thing. Kylo Ren's quest to find Emperor Palpatine took only around 30 seconds to play out, but there were once plans for an extended journey that would have seen the villain battle a group of mysterious Sith worshippers before crossing paths with the Eye of Webbish Bog on Mustafar.
That mysterious creature would have been guarding Darth Vader's Sith Wayfinder, no doubt providing some exposition and making Kylo Ren's shock meeting with the Emperor a little more meaningful. None of that made the final cut, unfortunately, but concept artist Jon McCoy has now shared some of his work from the movie revealing how that extended sequence was going to play out.
"These were development sketches for the story point of Kylo Ren carving through miscellaneous, unknown enemies searching for the Wayfinder, that would guide him to Exegol," he explains.
While Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was a major disappointment for many fans, it introduced a lot of interesting ideas that Lucasfilm has continued exploring. Many have argued Colin Trevorrow's vision for Episode IX ("Duel of the Fates") would have been more satisfying, but we'll never know.
