The Darksaber has long been an important part of Mandalorian culture and the iconic blade finally returned to one of its original owners in today's episode of The Mandalorian.
Created by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order, we first came across it in the hands of Pre Viszla, the leader of Death Watch. After he was killed by Maul, the weapon remained in the former Sith's possession until it was retrieved by Sabine Wren from a Nightsister lair on Dathomir.
She'd later give it to Bo-Katan Kryze who reluctantly accepted and agreed to use it to lead their people. However, Moff Gideon's attack on Mandalore meant it fell into Imperial hands and it was in The Mandalorian's season 1 finale that we saw him wield it for the first time.
When the show's second season rolled around, Din Djarin defeated the villain during his quest to rescue Grogu and took the blade. He never really wanted it and has since proved that he can't wield it (at least not well).
After Bo-Katan defeats that returning season 2 character - read more about them here - she's still rejected by her fellow Nite Owls because the Darksaber is in the hands of a "misguided zealot" who has no Mandalorian blood in him. These people will never see Din as Mandalore's rightful leader, while his own coven doesn't put as much stock in the blade as them, anyway.
Alas, those of you hoping to see the bounty hunter emerge as Mandalore's rightful ruler are likely to be disappointed as he steps forward to explain that, while exploring their planet, the Darksaber was taken from him by that sinister alien/droid hybrid. It was Bo-Katan who retrieved it from the creature, thereby once again making her its rightful owner.
With that, she takes the weapon and ignites it, securing the loyalty of these followers and setting the stage for her, the person who saw that Mythosaur, remember, as Mandalore's future ruler.
As for Din...well, it's hard to say how he'll fit into this.
