It's certainly a tough time to be a Power Rangers fan right now.
Over in Japan, Toei recently put the long-running Super Sentai franchise on ice for the foreseeable future, and here in the States, it seems the promising Disney+ Power Rangers series has run into an insurmountable roadblock.
Per Deadline Hollywood, the project at Disney+, which was being spearheaded by the Percy Jackson executive producing team of showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, is not moving forward.
According to the report, the decision by Disney+ to pass on the project was made purely for financial reasons and did not have anything to do with what Steinberg and Shotz were pitching, creatively.
Last month at San Diego Comic-Con, a Hasbro rep (Hasbro currently owns the rights to Power Rangers) confirmed that the series was in active development but not officially greenlit yet.
However, it was extremely curious that while that comment was made, Steinberg and Shotz were in attendance at SDCC to promote Percy Jackson season 3, they participated in a post-panel press linet, and yet somehow, there were no questions or comments that emerged about their Power Rangers series.
Well, we now know why.
With the deal now officially dead, perhaps we'll learn more about what Steinberg and Shotz were planning when they ramp up promotional activities for Percy Jackson season 3, which will premiere on November 20, 2026.
Rumors earlier this year speculated that Shaun Dixon (Vampirina: Teenage Vampire), Paris Bravo (Bad Therapy), Judd Goodstein (You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah), Momoma Tamada (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Christian Alexander Cruz (New Girl), Kira McLean (Permanent), and Mason Thames (The Black Phone, How To Train Your Dragon) were being considered or had already tested for roles.
Another rumor speculated that Priyanka Chopra (Quantico, CITADEL) was in talks for the franchise’s signature villain role, Rita Repulsa.
The Disney+ Power Rangers project was first rumored in March 2025 before being officially confirmed in December 2025.
Under new Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro, who took over from Bob Iger back in March 2026, spending at Disney+ has been dialed way down.
Wonder Man season 2 was recently cancelled, despite securing several Emmy Nominations.
Similarly, the number of high-profile and high-budget Marvel Studios and Star Wars shows has been significantly reduced for the foreseeable future in comparison to years past.
Prior to Hasbro and Disney+ working on a Power Rangers development concept, a similar deal was in place at Netflix.
In November 2021, Hasbro and Netflix announced that filmmaker Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F**ing World*) had been tapped to spearhead a reimagined Power Rangers universe across both film and television.
However, by mid-2024, reports emerged that the Entwistle-led live-action reboot had stalled and was no longer moving forward at Netflix. That's when the project shifted to Disney+.
With Power Rangers now striking out at Netflix and Disney+, perhaps Hasbro will turn to Amazon Prime Video or HBO Max next?
