While Doctor Who has a loyal, very passionate fanbase, it's fair to say that BBC's budget for the series has held it back somewhat. Now, with Disney+ involved, as much as triple is expected to be spent on the show from season to season, giving the franchise its best chance yet to break into the mainstream.
As filming gets underway in Cardiff, Wales, some new stills have been released showcasing Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor And Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday. They both look fantastic here, and it definitely feels like Russell T Davies, BBC, and Disney+ are doing what they can to make Doctor Who feel a little less niche, and more like big-budget event TV.
Gatwa already has a loyal fanbase after starring in Netflix's Sex Education, while Gibson stands a chance of hitting the big time with this show after her role in British soap Coronation Street.
Davies recently talked about casting the relative unknown in Doctor Who, saying: "It's the great honour of my job to find the next generation of talent, and Millie shines like a star already."
"She's brilliant, dynamic, clever and a wonderful actor," he continued. "As a 'Coronation Street' fan, I've seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that's nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday."
New episodes of Doctor Who will return to screens in November 2023 to coincide with the 60th anniversary. David Tennant will play the Fourteenth Doctor for three specials next year, before Gatwa takes over the role as the Fifteenth Doctor.
