The Ghostbusters animated series is moving full speed ahead it seems.
Prior to now, the last update received on the animated Ghostbusters series at Netflix came back in March 2024, when Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan provided a brief update on the series.
Now, a series of job postings from Australia's Flying Bark Productions, the studio behind hits like Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel’s What If…?, signals that production is gearing up.
Notably, the hiring is for their Sydney and Spain offices.
A Ghostbusters animated television series intended for Netflix was first announced back in June 2022 with very little in the way of updates since that initial announcement. It seems the project may have been dormant for a while as Kenan has confirmed that the scripts are still being written.
Spearheading the development of this exciting venture is none other than Kenan, who is joined by a familiar name in the Ghostbusters universe: Jason Reitman.
The son of the legendary Ivan Reitman, the director of the original 1984 masterpiece, Jason has been instrumental in the franchise's recent revival. He directed 2021's heartfelt sequel, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and co-wrote the script alongside Kenan.
The enduring Ghostbusters saga all began with the cult-classic, comedic supernatural film from 1984, a brilliant creation of Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.
The core concept – a ragtag group of individuals who bravely (and often hilariously) launch a ghost-catching business, armed with specialized gadgets and iconic vehicles – has captured imaginations for decades.
The franchise's spectral footprint is substantial, boasting a total of five movies to date, including the two recent Kenan and Reitman productions, the 2016 all-female reboot, and the 1989 sequel.
But this isn't the first time the Ghostbusters have gone animated! Fans of a certain era fondly remember the beloved The Real Ghostbusters, which graced our screens in the late 80s and early 90s, proving the property's enduring appeal in cartoon form.
While the wait for this new animated series continues, the confirmation that the animation studio is staffing up is certainly a positive sign.
With the creative power of Kenan and Jason Reitman behind it, and the legacy of the Ghostbusters universe to draw from, this Netflix animated adventure has the potential to introduce a whole new generation to the wonders (and scares) of ghostbusting.
