Apple TV's Severance is widely regarded as one of the best science fiction psychological thrillers on television. The only problem is how long we've had to wait between seasons so far.
The series first debuted back in February 2022, but development delays, Hollywood strikes, and production issues resulted in a long gap that didn't see Season 2 premiere until January 2025. The second season concluded in March with yet another jaw-dropping cliffhanger that we're dying to see revolved.
Unfortunately, we don't know when that will be.
Apple has already renewed Severance for Season 3, which began filming in April, more than a year after Season 2 ended. While we don't know why it took Apple so long to pull the trigger on renewing the critically acclaimed series for a third season, the fact that it's now begun filming should hopefully mean we won't have to wait as long between seasons.
Appearing on the red carpet at the BAFTA TV Awards, series star Adam Scott was asked about the wait for Season 3. While he couldn't give even a vague timeline, he did tell Deadline that the creative team is working to deliver the new season "much soon."
“We’re always trying to shorten the amount of time between seasons, but it’s more important for it to be great than for it to be fast," Scott said. “We’re definitely planning on getting it out much sooner than the last round, which was three years, which is too long.”
Since the rise of streaming services, we've seen seasons of shows become shorter and farther in between. I think some streamers are starting to acknowledge fan frustration with the wait between new seasons, but the last thing you'd want to do with a show like Severance is sacrifice its brilliance for speed.
Executive produced by Ben Stiller alongside creator, writer, and executive producer Dan Erickson, Severance has received worldwide acclaim from fans and critics alike. Season One landed 14 Emmy Award nominations including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Stiller), Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Scott) and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. It took home awards for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series and Outstanding Main Title Design.
In “Severance,” Mark Scout (Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure that surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in “work-life balance” is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work … and of himself. In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe. Season two welcomes new series regulars Sarah Bock and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.
It's unlikely that Severance will return this year, but a 2027 release window for Season 3 doesn't seem out of the question given the creative team's urgency this time around.
