2017's The Dark Tower had the potential to be a great movie and was supposed to be the beginning of a new franchise that would tell stories set in that world both in theaters and on streaming. Unfortunately, it was a total mess that not even A-List leads Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey could save.
As a result, the property - which is based on a phenomenal series of novels by Stephen King - has fallen by the wayside and interest from Hollywood has waned. Filmmaker Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep), however, remains attached to a streaming series he hopes to make a reality.
The filmmaker acquired the rights to King's epic sci-fi fantasy tale last December, so it's clearly still early days. In past interviews, he's confirmed the first episode's script is completed and revealed his adaptation would run for a total of five seasons.
That hopefully means we'd get a faithful take on the author's novels that tells this complex, compelling story the right way. Someone who clearly believes that Flanagan is the right person to deliver on that is King himself based on a recent Tweet from the best-selling author!
It's important to note that no network or streaming service is currently attached to The Dark Tower. Plus, with the ongoing WGA strike, Flanagan has likely halted all work on this and any other project he's attached to.
He certainly seems to have a good grasp on what went wrong with that 2017 movie. "[My Dark Tower adaptation] couldn't be more different [from the movie]," Flanagan previously explained. "That was the wrong approach to the material, kind've across the board, and it was such the wrong approach that I think it kind've salted the earth for anyone else who wanted to plant something under the Dark Tower banner for who knows how long."
