HBO's adaptation of George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas was something of a surprise hit.
While the Game of Thrones franchise is still proving to be incredibly popular with viewers and streamers, the lighter tone of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms was a refreshing change of pace.
And season 2 could be coming sooner than expected as Egg actor Dexter Sol Ansell posted on his Instagram Stories that filming on season 2 had wrapped. It is expected to premiere in early to mid-2027.
The second season of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms was previously expected to wrap filming back in June, but the production was slowed by torrential rains in Gran Carina, Spain.
The first season of the show has gone on to secure 9 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.
It will compete against The Diplomat (Netflix), The Gilded Age (HBO Max), Paradise (Hulu), The Pitt (HBO Max), Pluribus (Apple TV+), Slow Horses (Apple TV+), and Your Friends & Neighbors (Apple TV+).
The winner will be announced at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, which will take place live on Monday, September 14, 2026.
Given the popularity of the series, George R.R. Martin has confirmed that he's currently writing a new entry in the novella series to keep the show going.
There are currently three published Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas: The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010). All three novellas are collected in a compilation book titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2015).
The 6-episode first season covered 100% of The Hedge Knight and even expanded on bits not mentioned in the books (with Martin's backing) so if the production keeps the same pace, there's currently enough published material for 3 seasons.
Showrunner Ira Parker previously stated that Season 1 was a story about "fathers and sons and what's passed on to the next generation," while Season 2 would deal with the ramifications of "loyalty" and more specifically, "blind loyalty."
Recently, George R.R. Martin gave a melancholy update on his blog that has some longtime fans concerned about the author's health, but there's also equal concern about the completion of The Winds of Winter and the new Dunk and Egg novella.
