While Game of Thrones spanned the entirety of author George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, the author still hasn't completed The Winds of Winter still isn't done. With another book set to follow that long-delayed tome, chances are that the story's ending on the page will be vastly different from the hugely divisive Season 8.
Game of Thrones frequently diverged from the books—ditching several characters and subplots—and while Martin has confirmed that it won't necessarily match what he's writing, the final season has left HBO with plenty of options for potential sequels.
The cable network previously considered Snow, which would follow Jon Snow after he travelled north of The Wall following the events of Game of Thrones. That was put on ice a couple of years ago, though there have been rumblings about it being revisited.
Talking to Josh Horowitz, Harington once again reflected on the spin-off and seemed a little more open to the idea of revisiting Jon somewhere down the road.
"I think we developed it, [were] developing it for two years or so. I still think there’s a world in which something could work. I wouldn’t have gone into it in the first place if I didn’t," the actor remembered. "I was very insistent at the start—and they were as well, HBO and George—of, like, if this doesn’t—if we don’t find the right thing, let’s not do it. It’s much, much better we don’t."
"After a little while of thinking about it," Harington continued. "I think this isn’t quite the right time."
While Snow isn't moving forward right now, the Game of Thrones star is set to explore a very different fantasy world in HBO's upcoming adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Harington has taken over the role of Gilderoy Lockhart from Superman star Nicholas Hoult, who was forced to drop out of Season 2 due to scheduling issues.
The actor lent his voice to the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in Audible's Full-Cast Editions of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels, and he didn't hesitate to join the series.
"When I knew they were doing this show, I was like, 'I think that’s a brilliant idea, I think they can really delve into it further than the films did.' I’m fully supportive of it," Harington said. "And then I got called to be in it, and that was just a very simple, 'Yes, please!'"
Pushed on whether he's seen his Wizarding World costume, he added, "Yes, and I’m going to say very little about anything because it’s very secretive. But yes, I’m engaging with that as we speak. He’s addicted to himself. He’s just a tiny step to my left [Laughs]."
Lockhart is a great role for any actor, and seeing what Harington brings to him after previously voicing him promises to be a highlight when Harry Potter returns for its second batch of episodes. We're likely a long way off from seeing anything from The Chamber of Secrets, as the spotlight is currently on this December's adaptation of The Philosopher's Stone.
