A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 wrapped up tonight, but the journey of hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg, is only just beginning.
As you may very well know (or maybe not), A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. There are a total of three stories that follow Ser Duncan and Egg, all set in the same universe as Game of Thrones, about 100 years before the events of the main story.
Season 1 of A Knight of Seven Kingdoms adapts The Hegdge Knight novella, but there are still two more remaining: The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight. Thankfully, we already know that we're getting at least one more adaptation based on these novellas.
Back in November, even before Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiered, HBO confirmed that the Game of Thrones prequel spin-off had been renewed for a second season. And we already have confirmation that Season 2 will be based on The Sword Sword, which showrunner Ira Parker recently admitted was his favorite installment in Martin's trilogy.
"We’re now getting into The Sworn Sword, which is my favorite novella in many ways, with Rohanne Webber or the Red Widow, Ser Bennis, and Ser Eustace, who are these classic characters," Parker told AV Club. "I can’t say much but we have three absolutely brilliant actors coming in to do these roles. I’m excited."
It's already been confirmed that Lucy Boynton (Sing Street, The Politician) has been cast as Lady Rohanne Webber of Coldmoat, aka The Red Widow. The actors playing Ser Eustace Osgrey and Ser Bennis the Brown have not yet been announced, but we should hopefully learn more soon. Production on Season 2 is already well underway with filming beginning last month.
"We’ve been shooting [season 2] every day for the last two weeks," series showrunner Ira Parker told Esquire back in January. “We'll see how the audience responds and we'll go from there, but I love these characters and I love these stories so much."
While many of today's shows take years in between seasons, HBO CEO Casey Bloys previously told Deadline that they are hoping to roll out new seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms annually. With filming taking place while Season 1 was airing, this hopefully means we're on track for Season 2 to premiere in 2027.
"We are cutting some scenes together now, and the directors are seeing some of it, so it feels nice to see [season two] slowly come together," Parker told AV Club last week. "The show coming out at the same time as we work on it has been a blessing in many ways. It allows you to do what Dunk does by putting one foot in front of the other to focus on the work instead of just focusing on the response."
Overall, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been well-received by both critics and fans alike. Reviewers have praised its charming, character-driven storytelling, the chemistry between Ser Duncan and Egg, and its intimate take on the world of Westeros. While a few viewers have noted that the tone and pacing differ from the epic scale of Game of Thrones, most agree that the series succeeds in bringing George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg to life with heart and humor.
With strong viewership numbers, glowing reviews, and a second season already in production, it’s clear that the adventures of Dunk and Egg are only just beginning, and fans have plenty to look forward to as the story continues to unfold.
