It's been confirmed today that HBO has given a series order to drama series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.
Announced during Warner Bros. Discovery's unveiling of the Max streaming service on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles, the Game of Thrones prequel will be written and executive produced by author George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker. Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis, meanwhile, are set to executive produce.
We've been hearing rumblings about this series for the past couple of years, so it's exciting to see it now take shape at the cable network. House of the Dragon has been a huge hit for HBO since launching last year and is only expected to run for a few seasons, so we're not exactly shocked another Westeros-based project is being fast-tracked.
Unfortunately, there was no mention of the Game of Thrones sequel starring Kit Harington as Jon Snow.
Here's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight's logline:
"A century before the events of 'Game of Thrones,' two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros...a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg."
"Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends."
Martin is clearly going to be heavily involved with this series, news fans of the fantasy franchise are bound to welcome. However, we can't help but hope this project doesn't delay his next novel any further!
Various other prequels and spin-offs remain in development, but this will obviously be next for HBO. No actors are currently attached to the project (as far as we're aware), but more details are bound to be revealed in the weeks and months ahead.
