HBO has announced that filming is officially underway on the third season of House of the Dragon, and the show's social media accounts have shared a behind-the-scenes look at star Emma D'Arcy calling action while in-costume as Rhaenyra Targaryen.
In the season 2 finale, Rhaenyra and Daemon put their differences aside and joined forces as they prepared to launch a full-scale attack on King's Landing.
We'll be meeting some new faces in season 3, and following the recent news that James Norton will play Ormund Hightower, EW is reporting that Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy, Gladiator, Braveheart) has joined the cast as Ser Roderick Dustin, aka "Roddy the Ruin," along with Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts, A Complete Unknown) as Ser Torrhen Manderly.
“I don't want to say much because I think this is one of those truly memorable Game of Thrones characters, and I'm very excited to bring him into the fold,” showrunner Ryan Condal says of Roddy. “But he is a fixture in Fire & Blood, and I think he's one of those true fan favorites. I'm very, very proud of the role that we've written.”
Condal confirmed that the plan is for the show to conclude with a fourth season during a press conference last August, though Season 4 of the Game of Thrones prequel series has yet to be formally greenlit.

"The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires—real and imagined—crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm."
House of the Dragon season 2 sees Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans reprise their respective roles. Additional returning cast includes Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham.
