HBO has narrowed the premiere window for its upcoming Harry Potter series. Previously expected to debut in 2027, HBO chief Casey Bloys has now clarified that the series is targeting an early 2027 premiere.
"Well, we’ve been saying 2027. I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027," Case Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, told Deadline. "And now you’re going to ask, does that mean January, February, March, April, that we’re not ready to say. I’ll say early 2027."
HBO had previously confirmed a 2027 release window for the series, but now Bloys has given us a clearer timeline. Of course, this is all depending on filming.
Production began last year with filming kicking off in the summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, UK. Industry experts speculate that filming on the first season might run until early 2026, an estimation based on typical schedules for high-production shows of this scale.
HBO's upcoming television series is intended to be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling's original Harry Potter novels. Each season is expected to cover one of the seven books, allowing for more detail than the films.
Produced by HBO Entertainment alongside Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films, the company behind the original films, the series aims to deliver a sweeping, high-end adaptation of the Harry Potter novels, expanding the story and world-building beyond the movies. Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials, Killing Eve) is attached as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, while Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones) will executive produce and direct several episodes. Hans Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers will compose new score for the original series.
The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, adn Alistair Stoute as Ron Weasley. They'll be joined by John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander. Warwick Davis is also returning as Professor Filius Flitwick.
One major role that remains a mystery as of this writing is Lord Voldemort. HBO has still not revealed who will be playing the main antagonist, though the latest rumors have centered on Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer).
