ExtraTV recently caught up with actor Tom Felton, who recently announced that he would be reprising his role as Draco Malfoy for a stint on the Broadway play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Felton said he's happy to be "stepping into old shoes" but is excited to show them, "in a new light."
In Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Draco Malfoy emerges as a far more nuanced and sympathetic character than the spiteful rival fans remember. No longer defined by animosity toward Harry, Draco is portrayed as a man burdened by his family's dark legacy, striving to forge a better path, and a genuine connection with his son, Scorpius.
Draco’s son, Scorpius Malfoy, forms an unexpected and heartfelt bond with Albus Severus Potter, Harry’s son- a friendship that surprises both families.
Fiercely devoted to Scorpius, Draco becomes especially protective as his son endures relentless bullying and disturbing rumors suggesting he’s the child of Voldemort. This deep concern compels Draco to confront Harry, uneasy about the toll the boys’ friendship might be taking on Scorpius and determined to shield him from further pain.
Separately, Variety also spoke with Felton about J.K. Rowling's controversial trans views and if her polarizing social media posts have affected him.
Said Felton, "I'm not really that attuned to it. The only thing I always remind myself is that I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world — here I am in New York. — and I have not seen anything bring the world together more than ‘Potter.' She's responsible for that, so I'm incredibly grateful."
More recently, Rowling spoke out 'against' those who would see Paapa Essiedu fired from the upcoming Max Harry Potter show.
Online rabblerousers pointed to Essiedu's past support of trans rights but Rowling was suprisingly diplomatic, stating, "I don’t have the power to sack an actor from the series, and I wouldn’t exercise it if I did. I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine."
