HARRY POTTER: HBO Max Meeting With Controversial Author J.K. Rowling To Plot Franchise's TV Future

A new report reveals that Warner Bros.' new CEO will meet with author J.K. Rowling to plot out the Harry Potter franchise's future, albeit on HBO Max instead of in theaters. Find more details right here...

Over the past couple of years, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has become a surprisingly divisive and controversial figure. What many perceive to be "anti-trans" views have led to the Boy Wizard's creator being sidelined to some extent, hence why she was absent from that HBO Max reunion and even cut from a sizzle reel of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore's red carpet premiere.

Recently, Warner Bros. appointed a new CEO, David Zaslav. That came as a result of WarnerMedia's merger with Discovery, and the recent cancellation of DC's The Wonder Twins proves he's not afraid to make some sweeping changes to how the studio produces content (in that instance, it's been decided that the focus will shift back to theatrical releases for movies set in the DC Universe).

The Fantastic Beasts franchise has struggled to attract audiences to theaters, and it appears the plan now is to shift the Wizarding World's focus to Warner Bros.'s streaming platform, HBO Max.

In a report from The Wall Street Journal about the studio's future plans, it's said: "At the same time, Mr. Zaslav is looking to make fresh 'Harry Potter'-related content for HBO Max - Warner Bros. made all the wizarding franchise’s movies - people familiar with his thinking said, and plans to meet with creator J.K. Rowling in the coming weeks to discuss the matter."

So, controversial or not, Rowling will clearly be heavily involved with what sounds like future Wizarding World TV shows. There are any number of characters and setting those could take us to, though if the response to Fantastic Beasts has been any indication, it might be for the best to tell new stories with original characters rather than exploring the history that not even die-hard fans care about.

Fingers crossed with headed back to Hogwarts with a new set of leads, eh?
