Amazon is continuing to create a powerhouse of fantasy television series. With The Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power anchoring its streaming line-up, Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the studio has acquired the rights to author Rebecca Yarros' ongoing The Empyrean saga to produce, yet another fantasy TV series.
An adaptation of the first entry in the series, Fourth Wing, is currently in development by Michael B. Jordan’s production banner, Outlier Society.
Michael B. Jordan and Outlier Society signed a first-look deal with Amazon back in February 2021 and previously released the Tom Clancy adaptation, Without Remorse.
Fourth Wing was published in April 2023 and quickly gained traction to currently rank #7 on Amazon's list of best sellers. The second entry in the series, Iron Flame, currently ranks #3 and is set to be published on November 7.
The blurb on the book's dust cover reads, "Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general―also known as her tough-as-talons mother―has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them."
"With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter―like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise."
"Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret. Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda―because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die."
While Jordan is executive producing, there's no word yet on whether he plans to star in the adaptation. Following Iron Flame, there are currently three more confirmed installments set to be published in The Empyrean saga.
Fourth Wing was previously named Barnes & Noble and Indigo Best Book of 2023. The book rose to prominence on Tik Tok where its associated hashtags have generated over a billion views worldwide.
Yarros will serve as a non-writing executive producer on the show, alongside her publisher, Liz Pelletier.
