Death of a Unicorn was one of the first films to receive a Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) waiver to continue filming despite the ongoing Hollywood strike and it's now being reported that the production has wrapped filming after four months in Budapest, Hungary.
With the shoot now wrapped, the full cast has also been revealed. At the time of the project's announcement, only the two leads- Paul Rudd (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) and Jenna Ortega (Scream, Wednesday) were announced.
Joining Rudd and Ortega in the Alex Scarfman (Resurrection) written and directed pic are Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Richard E. Grant (Saltburn, A Series of Unfortunate Events ) Téa Leoni (Flirting with Disaster, Madam Secretar), Jessica Hynes (Shaun of the Dead, Paddington 2), Anthony Carrigan (Barry, Bill & Ted Face the Music), Stephen Park (In Living Color, Asteroid City) and Sunita Mani (Mr. Robot, GLOW).
Described as a dark comedy, Death of a Unicorn follows a father who brings his daughter with him to a corporate, weekend retreat in the wilderness which is sponsored by his billionaire boss. While en route, the father and daughter duo inexplicably hit and kill a mythical unicorn. They then strap it to their hood and bring it to the treat, where the billionaire CEO sponsor of the getaway becomes determined to exploit the restorative powers of the carcass after it's discovered that even in death, the unicorn still has mystical abilities.
Grant portrays the billionaire boss.
A24 co-financed the pic alongside Ley Line Entertainment and will handle global distribution.
Halloween and The Thing director John Carpenter is handling the score alongside his son Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies.
The film's quirky premise seems right in line with A24's previous off-the-wall, atypical offerings such as Ex Machina, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Midsommar and Pearl. On paper, (and with such a strong cast) we're thinking A24 may have another awards contender on its hands.
Ortega can next be seen reprising her role as Tara Carpenter in Scream 7 and as Wednesday Addams in season 2 of Netflix's Wednesday.
Rudd's additional upcoming projects include a second turn as Gary Grooberson in the upcoming, Untitled Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel and as well as another turn as Scott Lang in Marvel's Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Stay tuned for future updates regarding Death of a Unicorn's release date and promotional material.
