Can we call Pacific Rim a classic now that it's approaching 10 years since its release back on July 12, 2013? Time sure flies!
Regardless, director Guillermo del Toro is apparently planning something special to mark the milestone as revealed via Twitter.
Previously, del Toro revealed that he was in talks with Legendary Pictures for a special re-release of Pacific Rim in IMAX 3D to mark the occasion. Stay tuned for future updates as we'll confirm if this is the "little something" del Toro is teasing.
Pacific Rim starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman and was set in the near future, where giant monsters called Kaiju have emerged from the Pacific Ocean and begun attacking cities. In response, the world's governments have created a special task force called the Jaeger Program, which uses giant robots to fight the Kaiju.
The film teetered on the edge of profitability, grossing $411 million worldwide. Legendary Pictures had faith in the property and partnered with Universal Pictures to distribute a sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising in 2018, which enlisted John Boyega as the new lead.
A Netflix anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black, followed in 2021.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
