As a follow-up to earlier reports this week that Warner Bros. was moving forward with a sequel to the 1998 American fantasy, comedy film Practical Magic, it has now been confirmed that original stars, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman will be reprising their roles.
In the original film, Bullock portrayed Sally Owens, who attempted to shun magic and live a normal life but returned to her magical heritage following the death of her husband and learning that her sister, Gillian (portrayed by Kidman) was in an abusive relationship.
Speaking to People regarding the Practical Magic sequel, Kidman stated, "Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that's that," she laughed. "There's a lot more to tell which is why we go, 'OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.'"
In terms of why the sequel is happening now after 26 years, Kidman simply replied, "[We] found a way in."
Original screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind), has been tapped to write the screenplay for the sequel.
Based on Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel, the first Practical Magic movie centers on sisters Gillian and Sally, who were reared by their aunts following the untimely death of their parents.
The family bands together to fight off a curse that was designed to prevent any of the women in their bloodline from ever falling in love, as the curse has lethal consequences for the men they are romantically involved with.
Alice Hoffman actually wrote three other books in the Practical Magic series: a 2021 sequel titled The Book of Magic, and two prequels, 2017's The Rules of Magic and 2020's Magic Lessons.
It is currently unknown if the script that Goldsman is writing will be based off of Hoffman's other books.
HBO previously sought to revive Practical Magic a few years ago in 2019 with plans for a television reboot but the show ultimately never made it out of the development stage.
After opening to poor reviews from critics in 1998, the original pic grossed a pedestrian $68.3 million worldwide from a $75 million production budget, however it has since developed a cult following.
