If you've been on Twitter X lately, we'd bet you've seen claims Disney's live-action version Snow White has been cancelled. Unrelated comments from lead star Rachel Zegler have already been manipulated to create more ill-feeling towards the movie and this seems to be part of an effort to spread misinformation.
As we first explained in Toonado.com, it all started when a parody site, MouseTrap News, posted a story claiming the studio had pulled the plug on this controversial remake. Unaware that it was meant in jest, thousands of people have flocked to various social media platforms to declare victory in their war against, uh, Snow White.
Still, despite what you might have seen, Snow White has not been scrapped by Disney.
In related news, though, former Hollywood Reporter editor Matt Belloni has published his latest Puck newsletter, and suggests the movie - currently scheduled for March 22, 2024 - will "almost certainly move off that date."
Given the controversy surrounding this latest take on the iconic fairy tale, there's a chance Disney is planning reshoots to address some of the backlash. Either way, the recent news that Dune: Part Two has shifted from November 3 to March 15 could also be a major contributing factor.
While the movie has definitely split opinions, there's simply no way the studio is going to scrap a movie they've spent hundreds of millions of dollars on because of social media backlash.
Snow White is clearly going to have the odds stacked against it, particularly after the decision was made to replace the Seven Dwarfs. There's also the deeply disturbing fact some people are unhappy simply because a Latina actress has been cast in the title role.
Zegler, unfortunately, has made remarks which have done little to win support and there are certain outlets that have jumped at the chance to write this movie off as another example of Hollywood being politically correct or "woke."
We won't know whether the changes to Snow White are a good or bad thing until it arrives in theaters next year. There's every chance it will exceed expectations and be another Aladdin; then again, it could prove as disastrous as Pinocchio.
What we can confidently say is the movie is still being released...sometime in 2024.
