Hollywood went on strike last Friday, but Friday saw some photos from the set of Marc Webb's live-action Snow White remake find their way online.
While a stand-in was clearly doubling for lead star Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Snow White was shown alongside the Seven Dwarves...only one of whom was actually a little person. The rest was a diverse group of male and female actors, and it took no time at all for Twitter to start tearing into this "politically correct" reboot.
Disney chose to respond by declaring the set photos "fake," though The Daily Mail was quick to counter that argument with some compelling evidence. This wouldn't be the first time the House of Mouse has claimed an early sneak peek isn't the real deal solely because it's done the rounds online sooner than they'd have liked.
Alas, some internet trolls took this opportunity to start taking aim at Zegler for the fact she's a Latina actress playing Snow White.
The Shazam! Fury of the Gods star eventually responded by showing some photos of herself as a child dressed as a princess and said, "[I'm] extremely appreciative of the love I feel from those defending me online, but please don’t tag me in the nonsensical discourse about my casting. [I] really, truly do not want to see it."
"[So I] leave you [with] these photos! [I] hope every child knows they can be a princess no matter what."
Snow White was previously criticised by Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage for casting a diverse lead, only to surround her with stereotypical dwarf characters. We later heard the idea was to reimagine the seven supporting playing as "magical creatures," but they look like mostly normal humans to us!
Joining Zelger in Snow White is Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, while Webb is directing the movie from a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson.
The movie is currently set to be released in theaters on March 22, 2024.
