Based on the extraordinary character at the centre of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one of the best-selling children's books of all time, Wonka tells the wondrous story of how the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today.
Now, we have a trailer and poster for the movie which offer up an idea of what to expect from this quirky origin story....and it's going to be quite the trip if this sneak peek is any indication! Some of the VFX is a tad hit or miss (we're not sure what to think about Hugh Grant's Oompa Loompa) but there's time to fix that and we're confident Timothée Chalamet's massive fanbase will appreciate his take on Willy Wonka.
The tone and visuals certainly appear to be in line with what we've seen in past adaptations of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, though the movie's lead definitely isn't quite as out there with the role as Johnny Depp was back in 2005!
From Paul King, writer and director of the Paddington movies, comes what's described as "an intoxicating mix of magic and music, mayhem and emotion, all told with fabulous heart and humor."
Starring Chalamet in the title role, "this irresistibly vivid and inventive big screen spectacle will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka, chock-full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time—proving that the best things in life begin with a dream, and if you’re lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka, anything is possible."
Joining the Dune actor are Hugh Grant, Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Olivia Colman, Natasha Rothwell, Rich Fulcher, Rakhee Thakrar, Tom Davis, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
Simon Farnaby (Paddington 2) and Paul King wrote the screenplay, based on a story by King and characters created by Roald Dahl.
Wonka arrives in theaters on December 15.
