Disney (via On The Red Carpet) has released the first footage from the upcoming live-action adaptation of Pinocchio, which will be based on the 1940 animated classic and the original book of the same name.
The full trailer is set to debut on GMA at some point tomorrow, but for now, you can get a first glimpse of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises, Looper) as Jiminy Cricket, Cynthia Ervio (Widows, The Outsider) as the Blue Fairy, and Tom Hanks (Road to Perdition, Saving Private Ryan) as Pinocchio's father/creator Geppetto.
Though a fairly minor character in Carlo Collodi's story, Jiminy had a much larger role in the animated film, serving as Pinocchio's official "conscience." Likewise, the Blue Fairy appeared at pivotal moments in an attempt to keep the little fella on the straight and narrow.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Flora and Ulysses) will provide the voice of the titular wooden boy, while Keegan-Michael Key (The Predator) will bring life to Honest John, and Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast) will play The Coachman. Lorraine Bracco (Goodfellas, The Sopranos) is also on board as a new character, Sofia the Seagull.
Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis will helm the project, and also co-wrote the script with Chris Weitz. No release date has been set, but we will most likely find out when to expect the movie with tomorrow's trailer.
Like Lady and the Tramp, Pinocchio will skip theatres and head straight to Disney+.
