Game of Thrones' impressive opening credits always gave fans something to talk about, and there was definitely a lot of excitement about what House of the Dragons would deliver on that front. Visually, it's impressive, though viewers were shocked to hear it use the exact same theme as its predecessor!
Composer Ramin Djawadi is responsible for scoring both shows, and while some were quick to dismiss the decision to keep the same theme as laziness, there was a good reason for that.
"I think that’s a good example of tying back the old material with the new," he tells IGN. "As a franchise to just connect all of these stories together."
"In the original main title, we always looked at and thought of it as an overarching theme that connects all of the characters and the journey and the adventures of this universe. So we felt it would be appropriate to connect it with this main title theme again."
Of course, just because the main theme remains the same doesn't mean Djawadi isn't creating new music for the ambitious spinoff. "Melodically I’m starting completely from scratch, but sonically I’m drawing back from the original score," he explains. "There are certain sounds that I will use that I would have used with the Targaryens in the past."
It's an interesting approach, but certainly not one that's negatively impacted House of the Dragon in any way. The events of this series are closely tied to Game of Thrones, so certain sounds carrying over is no different to what we've seen from the Star Wars franchise as that's expanded in recent years.
We're intrigued to see what future spinoffs, prequels, and sequels have planned, but we'd be lying if we said that Game of Thrones doesn't generate a certain level of excitement each week with House of the Dragon!
What are your thoughts on both shows sharing the same theme?
