Previously teased by the trades earlier this year, Starz has now officially announced that a prequel series to sci-fi-tinged romantic period drama, Outlander, is on the way.
Titled "Blood of My Blood," the show is set to focus on the relationship between Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser.
Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts will also head-up and write Blood of My Blood while serving as showrunner and executive producer. Maril Davis will also executive produce along with Ronald D. Moore, who developed the original series under their Tall Ship Productions banner.
“Outlander is a riveting show that from season to season has captured the hearts of its fans around the world,” said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming at Starz. “We are excited to peel back the layers of this vibrant world to bring our audience the origin of where it all began. Matthew, Maril, and Ronald will continue to bring their excellent vision and creativity to this new iteration, and we can’t wait to see what happens next.”
If you're unfamiliar with Outlander, it's a raunchy, violent, and incredibly popular drama about a nurse named Claire Beauchamp Randall who is mysteriously sent back in time from WWII to Scotland in 1743. There, she meets a dashing Highland warrior and gets drawn into an epic rebellion.
The show's sci-fi/fantasy elements are underplayed in favor of sweeping romance, but they're going to have to explain how Claire ended up travelling through time eventually!
