The Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been renewed for a second season. The announcement was made by Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, during the first quarter earnings call for the 2024 fiscal year.

The upcoming season will be based on The Sea of Monsters, the second book in Rick Riordan's best-selling series published by Disney Hyperion. The season will feature the return of Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri, and will take the audience on a new adventure.

Ayo Davis, President of Disney Branded Television, expressed excitement about the new season, saying, "Rich in magic, wonder, adventure, and heart, 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' captivated the imaginations of viewers of all ages everywhere." She's looking forward to the new season and working with Riordan, 20th Television, and the talented cast and crew.

Riordan himself is also excited about the new season and said, "I can't wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson to Disney+! Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We're heading for the Sea of Monsters!"

According to Disney, the first episode of "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" premiered to 26.2 million views in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu, making it one of the top five season premieres of 2023.  Disney's internal metrics shows that the first season has accrued over 110 million streaming hours to date.

The success of the show has resulted in the Percy Jackson books returning to the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list for Middle Grade series following the series' debut. The show has also inspired Hot Topic to launch an assortment of apparel, while Barnes & Noble released a variety of stationery alongside the published books. More pieces are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Season one of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently streaming on Disney+.

The show was created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg and is executive produced by Steinberg and Dan Shotz alongside Rick Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Bert Salke, Jeremy Bell, D.J. Goldberg, James Bobin, Jim Rowe, Monica Owusu-Breen, Anders Engström, Jet Wilkinson, and Craig Silverstein.

About Percy Jackson & the Olympians

The Percy Jackson & the Olympians series is a popular set of five fantasy adventure novels written by Rick Riordan. The story follows Percy Jackson, a young boy who discovers he is the son of Poseidon, a demigod. It takes place in a modern world where Greek gods exist and interact with humans.

Rick Riordan, a former middle school teacher, created the series using Greek mythology as inspiration. He aimed to create a story that would interest his students, particularly those with learning differences, like his own son.

The first book, "The Lightning Thief", was published in 2005, followed by "The Sea of Monsters" in 2006, "The Titan's Curse" in 2007, "The Battle of the Labyrinth" in 2008, and "The Last Olympian" in 2009.

The Percy Jackson series has gone beyond books and has been adapted into various forms of media and merchandise, including movies, graphic novels, a musical, and spin-off series.

"The Lightning Thief" and "The Sea of Monsters" were adapted into movies in 2010 and 2013, respectively.

"The Lightning Thief" was also adapted into a musical, which debuted in New York in 2014, and has since toured the United States.

Rick Riordan has also expanded the Percy Jackson universe with additional books, including "The Heroes of Olympus, " "The Trials of Apollo, " and "Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, " which explore other mythologies and connect to the original series.
