Prime Video has finally released a new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and it offers an epic glimpse at what's to come when we finally return to Middle-earth this September.

There's an awful lot to delve into here as heaps of characters and locations are teased. That makes it hard to figure out where the show is taking us, though we can't help but wonder if that figure emerging from the fire is whoever Sauron was before he became the terrifying monster we saw in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Described as the "main teaser," we expect plenty more trailers to be released over the coming weeks. Prime Video is no doubt going to pull out all the stops to promote a show that reportedly cost them upwards of $250 million to make, and it so far looks like money well spent.

Remember, the show is also heading to next week's San Diego Comic-Con, so we anticipate a lot of big news to drop during that event now it's no longer being held virtually.

The show, adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic series of novels, is set to take place during the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. This story is set to follow a cast made up of established and new characters as they "confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth" (a.k.a. Sauron).

The series boasts a massive ensemble, while J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay are set to serve as showrunners. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres on September 2, later this year, so keep checking back here for updates as we have them.

Starting to feel they're going to congest the thousands of years of the 2nd Age into a couple of short years if the overarching narrative is the 1st Rise and Fall of Sauron, which going by the name and this trailer, it is.

Unless this takes place over 2 periods, the first where we follow Galadriel, the elves and the creation of the rings, and the second, we follow the Rise and Fall of the last King of Numenor, then after they're told converge into 1 for the Last Alliance war.

@1stDalek - my guess is they'll have flashbacks and that's it
