Brandon Sanderson is back at work on the Mistborn movie, and this time he has a whiteboard. In his latest weekly update, the author shared where the screenplay stands after his trip to meet with Apple, along with progress on the next Riftwake book and everything going on during the Dragonsteel Light Day sale.
Mistborn Screenplay 2.0 Is Underway
Sanderson spent much of this year working through the Mistborn screenplay, and his progress bar has now been reset to a new draft he calls "Mistborn screenplay 2.0." He put it at 15% for now while he works out how big the revision will be.
The update was recorded before he flew to Los Angeles to meet with Apple, and he made it clear he planned to run that meeting like one of his writing lectures.
"They seem a little scared of me because I've told them they need to have a whiteboard and we're going to take the outline, the original outline and the screenplay, and we're going to break it down and I'm going to go all professor Sanderson on them," Sanderson said. He added that the session could take two or three hours, or wrap up in an hour if things go faster than expected, and that he should have a better estimate soon.
Apple holds the rights to adapt both Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, so any movement on the screenplay is good news for fans waiting to see Vin and Kelsier on screen.
Riftwake 3 Hits 70% And Blightfall Keeps Selling
On the book side, Sanderson said co-writer Janci Patterson has made big progress on the third Riftwake book, which now sits at 70%. That is a huge jump from earlier in the year, when it was still under 30%.
Blightfall, the first book in the Riftwake series set in the Skyward universe, also landed on another bestseller list. It made the monthly New York Times young adult audio list, which Sanderson said he does not think he has ever appeared on before, and the book has now spent five weeks on bestseller lists. If you missed it, we recently covered how Blightfall hides Hoid in the Skyward universe.
Light Day Brings A Signed Skyward Leatherbound
The biggest part of the update was Light Day, Dragonsteel's version of Black Friday, held early so the team can take the holidays off. The sale started on October 24 at 9:00 a.m. MDT and runs through 11:59 p.m. MDT on October 27.
The headline item is the Skyward leatherbound edition. Sanderson signed the entire first print run, and every copy is numbered as well, which is something new for one of his leatherbounds.
Here is what else is part of the sale:
- 20% off almost everything in the Dragonsteel store, including pins
- 50% off all Radiant Order merch
- A restock of the Skyward slug plushies, plus a bundle with the leatherbound and your choice of slug
- The return of the Mistborn 20th anniversary items that debuted in London, along with a bundle
- An extra discount code for Dragonsteel Books newsletter subscribers, which stacks with the other deals online
Local fans also had a Light Day Market at Dragonsteel HQ on October 24, with warehouse tours and a few products normally only sold at in-person events.
War For Roshar And A Shout-Out To Kevin J. Anderson
Sanderson also gave a quick update on the War for Roshar board game campaign, which had passed $1.8 million when he recorded. He even said Victor Wembanyama wanted to talk to him about it when they met recently, since the Spurs star loves board games.
He also gave a shout-out to Kevin J. Anderson, who is running a BackerKit campaign for deluxe editions of The Saga of Seven Suns. Sanderson said Anderson mentored him early in his career, and that the first book of the series was a free gift from Anderson at a convention coffee chat years ago.
Finally, applications for Sanderson's 15-person BYU writing workshop opened on October 23 for one hour only, so anyone hoping to get in next time will want to have everything ready well before the window opens.
